Brno - The city of Znojmo wants to build a new bus station within two years. It is expected to be located next to the railway station of Czech Railways, with which it will share a ticketing area. Petr Nezveda, the mayor of Znojmo, stated this to ČTK today. The city hall must adjust the land use plan due to the new station and acquire part of the land from Czech Railways. Currently, people have to board buses from the public transport and integrated transport system (IDS) in the middle of a busy street in the city center. There is already one bus station in Znojmo, but buses cannot use it. "Years ago, it was privatized by the local transport company ČAS, which provided most of the connections. However, the South Moravian Region then signed contracts for basic transport services with other companies, to which ČAS did not allow the station to be used," Nezveda stated. According to him, the company also refused the city's offer to buy the station. Therefore, the city hall, in cooperation with the regional transport office, has prepared a study for a new station near the Czech Railways station. "We are now waiting for the position of the IDS coordinator, the company Kordis, and then we will start working on the documentation for the land use decision. If everything goes well, the station could operate as early as 2009," Nezveda added. The city will try to obtain a grant from European funds amounting to 85 percent of the costs. However, the city hall does not yet know the amount. The remaining 15 percent could, according to Nezveda, be covered by the South Moravian Region.
