Brno - The dilapidated trolleybus stop on Údolní Street in the center of Brno, which faces vandalism, could be transformed into an unconventional café, Tram café, by the end of the year. It is a valuable monument; one of the oldest functionalist buildings in Brno that made it famous. After the renovation, the stop could still serve passengers, said the mayor of the Brno-střed district, Libor Šťástka (ODS), to ČTK today. The project will cost 2.7 million crowns.
"It is not possible to structurally intervene in the building. Nevertheless, it is possible to work with this space and significantly enhance it," the mayor stated.
The project is complete. It was created in the Brno studio RAW. Architects Tomáš Rusín and Ivan Wahla plan to restore the building, which would then be covered with a glass structure. Thus, the stop would be protected from inclement weather while still serving its original purposes. A café would be established in the glass annex, along with an outdoor area.
Tram café could become a destination for walks under Špilberk Castle and especially in the park at Obilní trh, where the well-known maternity hospital is located. "Dads could enjoy the first joyful drink there after the birth of their little one," Rusín told Mladá fronta Dnes some time ago. The café is planned to feature stylish furnishings, including tram seats or leather handles from public transport.
The structure was built in 1926 according to the design of architect Oskar Pořísky. It is currently owned by the Brno transport company. If the intention is approved by the heritage protectors and if the barrier-free toilets under the café are also approved by health inspectors, construction work could begin in the autumn.
"Before that, the Brno-střed municipality would take ownership of the stop. We plan to rent out the café at a very favorable price, preferably to some civic association," Šťástka added.
