Jihlava - The representatives of the Vysočina Region today approved a grant for the town of Třebíč for the modernization of the ice rink. According to the regional councilor for education, youth, and sports Jan Břížďala (Pirates), the regional grant is set to cover 17 percent of the estimated costs, which are approximately 350 million crowns. The representatives decided that the grant will amount to a maximum of 59.5 million crowns.

Třebíč is also requesting funding from the National Sports Agency, seeking 40 million crowns from them. The reconstruction could begin in spring 2023, Třebíč mayor Pavel Pacal (For Třebíč) said earlier to ČTK.

“The amount of the grant was determined according to the methodology of the regional education department. This procedure is always used when the region is asked to co-finance similar sports investments. The ice rink in Třebíč is intended to serve not only as a base for the professional hockey team but also for the preparation of sports talents and for general leisure activities for youth, contributing to the improvement of the quality of life for citizens not only in Třebíč and its catchment area. The Vysočina Region grant will be incorporated into the regional budget for the corresponding year in which it will be paid out,” stated Břížďala.

The town is completing the detailed construction documentation. The mayor anticipates that the tender for the construction contractor could begin in the second half of next year.

The modernization of the ice rink is primarily aimed at improving its facilities. The plan includes expanding the rear part so that changing rooms and sanitary facilities can be created, which, according to previous statements by the mayor, are already inadequate. The auditorium and cooling technology will also be modified. The outdated ammonia cooling system is to be replaced with an ecological option.

The Třebíč ice rink began construction in 1956 and was completed in 1959. Twelve years later, it underwent its first major renovation, and in 1977 it was covered. However, the roof collapsed after a few days, resulting in the deaths of two people. The stadium reopened to the public in 1980. Since 1998, it has been owned by the town. The last major renovation of the stadium was in 2000, during which the ice surface, cooling system, and engine room were repaired.
