Prague - Prague City Councilors today postponed the discussion on the preparation of a change to the zoning plan that would allow the development of a park at the end of Revoluční Street in Prague 1. The possible initiation of the change will be discussed by the councilors at the end of November. Opponents of the change today, at the meeting, were mainly representatives of the Trojkoalice (Green Party, Christian Democrats, and STAN) and the Communists. In the past, there has been talk of building the so-called Golden Egg or a site for Alfons Mucha's Slav Epic in connection with this location.

According to Deputy Mayor Petra Kolínská (Green Party/Trojkoalice), the initiative for the change was proposed by the Prague 1 city hall. If the change were to be approved, the greenery in the zoning plan would be converted into a building plot. "The council received this material for rejection, but the consensus at the meeting was that it should be discussed," Kolínská said. She added that the land had never been classified as a building site, and before the construction of the embankment, there was a riverbed here.

If the councilors had agreed to initiate the change today, it would not mean that the park would be developed. The Institute of Planning and Development (IPR) would begin preparing the change, and its final form would subsequently have to be approved by the councilors.

City councilor Jan Wolf (KDU-ČSL/Trojkoalice) opposed the intention to initiate the zoning change, presenting a proposal with a negative stance. However, the councilors did not accept it. The commission and the committee for spatial development issued a negative opinion according to Wolf, and he believes the councilors should adhere to it.

Deputy Mayor of Prague 7 and councilor Ondřej Mirovský (Green Party/Trojkoalice) also opposes potential development. "The effort to develop every square meter is absurd to me. The city is overheating and every tree in the city center is valuable. It's enough if the city properly takes care of that land," Mirovský said.

On the other hand, councilor Jaroslava Janderová (ODS) supported the initiation of the change. According to her, the goal is to create new architecture in the park's place. "Nobody wants the Golden Egg, but we want to make Revoluční a dignified boulevard with a building at the end that would serve the public," she said.

Councilor Karel Grabein Procházka (ANO) stated that the city should support the work on the change since only during its discussions will it be clear from the individual house proposals whether or not to develop the small park.

After discussions, the councilors decided on Kolínská's proposal to postpone the approval of the document until the meeting on November 30. The several dozen-minute-long debate among the councilors often turned into a dispute between the right and the communists about what Prague looked like before 1989.

The project known as the Golden Egg was introduced by the Prague 1 city hall at the beginning of this year. One of the proposals was to place Mucha's Epic here. However, the city council decided that if a new building for the Slav Epic were to be constructed, it would be located at Těšnov.
