Nebílovy - The state castle in Nebílovech in the Plzeň region will this year begin the first steps leading to the restoration of the baroque French garden. Only some pavilions, small parts of the fountain, and drainage from the garden dating back to 1710 have been preserved. The castle has a completed project; if 18 million crowns can be raised, an attractive garden with flower beds, paths, and a fountain could be restored in its original style in three years. CTK was told this by the castle administrator Milan Fiala. "This is a unique undertaking because the National Heritage Institute does not invest in a standalone garden restoration anywhere," he said. After the repairs are completed, Nebílovy will have the most beautiful baroque garden to the west of Prague, he promised. This year, work will begin on repairing and cleaning the clogged baroque drainage system.
The area of 0.75 hectares is accessed through a gate from the courtyard. "It was an overgrown space where there was a municipal dump, backyards, and a playground. Twenty years ago, we began to clean and level it, but not according to any meaningful project," said the administrator. He recently received a project from an architect for a complete restoration. It includes the repair of two preserved garden pavilions and the construction of a modern louvered building in place of a vanished pavilion. The building could potentially be disassembled and will serve for weddings, concerts, or theater performances.
There are also plans to restore the original granite fountain, which had a diameter of eight meters. Only some parts of it have survived. Two tanks with a capacity of 18 cubic meters for groundwater and rainwater will be built seven meters underground in the garden, as the garden has no drainage. Water from the tanks will be used for irrigating the flower beds. The garden will be filled with flower bed squares about 30 meters on each side, partly bordered by evergreen boxwood bushes. Inside them will be lawn ornaments, colored sands, and clay. They will be connected by a network of paths. The garden will be open year-round.
In recent years, the Nebílovy castle has been undergoing restoration. After decades, extensive wall and ceiling paintings in the ballroom have been completely restored; the restoration of the staircase and the loggia of the rear wing will be completed this year. The administrator also wants to start the restoration of the facades of the rear castle wing as soon as possible.
