Dear ladies and gentlemen, dear colleagues, friends, the association for Beautiful Olomouc and its branch "Citizens Against Šantowka Tower" have launched, given the seriousness of the situation, the largest campaign to date attempting to draw attention to the dangers of this project on a nationwide scale. For those of you who need to familiarize yourselves with the topic more closely, we have prepared a new website. You will find information presented in an understandable manner, as well as statements or videos from personalities who support our initiative. For those of you who are clear about your stance, here is a direct link to the petition.
The unique panorama of the historic core of Olomouc, which has been continuously developed over the millennium, is seriously threatened. The investor Office Park Šantovka intends to build a twenty-three-story residential high-rise building, Šantovka Tower, in close proximity to the city's heritage conservation area. The city management, the heritage care department of the Olomouc city hall, and the regional office have no interest in securing the protection of Olomouc's historical values of national and global significance. As a result, the investor already has nearly all the statements needed to obtain a zoning decision.
The planned Šantovka Tower: - is to be located on the southern edge of the center just 890 m from the town hall building - at a height of 78 meters, it would match the tower of the Olomouc town hall and would surpass all Olomouc churches, except for the main tower of St. Wenceslas Cathedral - it would have a significantly more massive volume than the towers of historic Olomouc, a contrasting shape, and a conflicting glass façade - it would be visible from the very center of the city – the junction of Upper and Lower Square, thereby disturbing the genius loci of the Olomouc pearl on the UNESCO list – the Holy Trinity Column - it would dominate the views along the city streets surrounding the historic core
Valuable architectural monuments and artistic treasures of the past, along with the exceptionally preserved historic core and the unique panorama of the second most significant urban heritage conservation area in the Czech Republic, demand our highest respect, humility, and responsibility. Can you imagine a tower being built next to monuments in Heidelberg, Oxford, or Florence?
