Prague - This week marked the first clap of the television film Santini's Language, directed by Jiří Strach for Czech Television. The film adaptation of Miloš Urban's novel will combine elements of thriller, mysticism, and hermetic philosophy with an engaging historical excursion.
The lead role has been entrusted to David Švehlík, with appearances by Marek Taclík, Viktor Preiss, Martin Stropnický, Monika Timková, and Lucie Molnárová in supporting roles. The screenplay was written by Miloš Urban and Tomáš Končinský. The cinematographer is Martin Šec.
"Against the backdrop of the fascinating and unsettling architecture of Jan Blažej Santini, which uniquely blends elements of Baroque and Gothic styles, the story unfolds of a man who, at the dawn of the new millennium, searches for a sense of purpose and fulfillment that seems to be fading away," characterized the source material Kateřina Vilímková from Czech Television.
The hero of the story is a dissatisfied employee of an advertising agency tasked with an impossible assignment intended to justify his sudden dismissal from his job. He accepts the task, but it is more a gesture of defiance than a serious effort to save his position. His work indirectly leads him to uncover mysterious messages from a long-dead architect, which seem to resonate across time directly to him. He embarks on a quest to decipher these messages. His journey is marked by mysterious murders that somehow must be linked to his investigation. The captivating power of the world into which he is descending eliminates any possibility of him retreating from his intention. In the end, he is faced with a revelation that fundamentally alters his worldview.
Filmmakers have 20 filming days ahead of them. They will primarily shoot outdoors and at locations in Prague, Kladruby, Plasy, and other places. According to Vilímková, the film is expected to appear on screen sometime next year.
