Telč (Jihlavsko) - A traveling exhibition of photographs "Discover the World Heritage UNESCO" will start on Monday in Telč, in the Jihlava region, kicking off a series of events through which the city will commemorate the inscription of its monuments on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage list throughout the year. Telč was inscribed on the list in 1992 alongside Prague and Český Krumlov. "For Telč, this is a huge prestige, I believe that all visitors to the city recognize the positive changes," said the Deputy Mayor of Telč, Hana Müllerová, to journalists today. According to her, the inscription on the list has significantly increased the number of tourists visiting Telč, and the city has been successful in drawing funds from various grants, not only for the restoration of monuments. "Tracking visitor numbers is difficult, however, according to the latest marketing surveys, about 400,000 tourists come to the city annually, which is significantly more than 15 years ago," Müllerová added. The historical milestone will also be commemorated by performances of folklore groups from cities with UNESCO monuments in the Vysočina region. On May 26, people will watch performances in Zachariáš z Hradce Square from groups from Telč, Třebíč, and Žďár nad Sázavou, as well as artists from the Slovak partner city of Šala. On the last day of May, Telč will attempt to be recorded in the Czech Book of Records for threading beaded necklaces. "The idea of attempting a record was inspired by the recent declaration of the Telč castle as the fairest castle in the Czech Republic," said city spokeswoman Věra Peichlová. Representatives from the Pelhřimov agency Dobrý den will monitor the attempt. The inscription on the UNESCO list will also be remembered in Telč throughout the year with a number of other traditional events. These include the International Arts&Film Festival 2007, the Franco-Czech Music Academy, the "Holidays in Telč" festival, and other events. The city monument reservation in Telč was inscribed on the UNESCO list on December 13, 1992, along with Prague and Český Krumlov. After the last session of the World Heritage Committee, there are currently 830 sites on the list. Of these, 644 are cultural, 162 natural, and 24 mixed sites in 138 countries around the world. The Czech Republic is represented on the list by 12 monuments.
