Veltrusy - The restoration of 19 rooms continues at the Veltrusy Castle in the Mělník region. It concerns painting, stucco decoration, stonework, and fireplaces. It should be completed by the end of next year, after which restoration and production of fabric and paper wallpaper copies are planned. Tomáš Pospíšil from the National Heritage Institute stated this in response to ČTK.
Work on the castle, which will cost more than 20 million crowns, is proceeding according to schedule. "Given the large volume of work from various fields, the activities are phased so that individual professions logically follow each other," Pospíšil said.
Six rooms are already finished. This year, they could be visited as part of an exhibition called General Laudon is Passing Through Veltrusy, and this exhibition will continue next year.
In the northeastern wing, restoration concerns five rooms. According to Pospíšil, two connected rooms and a hallway are already finished, and another two are being restored. In the southeastern wing, there is one room. The ground-floor hall, Salla terena, is in a preparatory phase, according to him.
Rare textile and paper wallpapers are expected to be installed in 2020. The actual work will last several months, but it will be possible to start only after winter to ensure the building is climatically stable. "We therefore expect that the actual start of visitor operations will be no later than the beginning of the 2021 season," Pospíšil added.
During the Advent season, every weekend, guides at the castle have prepared Christmas tours. Visitors will learn how the noble Chotek family spent Christmas.
The castle has already been partially restored as part of a construction renewal in 2015. The area was affected by floods in 2002 and 2013.
