Semily - In Semily, they are planning to build a lookout tower on the Medenec hill, which is the second highest point of the Semily region. The lookout tower will offer tourists an unobstructed view in all directions. The construction, costing around four million crowns, is to be financed within the Czech-Polish project Lookouts, Viewpoints, and Trails for the Development of Tourism, which is being prepared by the Euroregion Nisa. The idea of building a viewpoint on the hill is not new, said Semily's deputy mayor Lena Mlejnková (Choice for Semily) today to ČTK. Already in the past, according to Mlejnková, a telecommunications signal amplifier tower with a staircase and viewpoint at the top was proposed for the hill. However, it was ultimately not built. The town hall is now preparing a new project, and an architectural study of the future lookout tower, authored by Milan Hilpert, has already been completed. The city has also begun negotiations with the owners of the affected lands and authorities. Semily is not the only town wanting to build a lookout tower in this cross-border project, so the readiness of the projects will be decisive. "The lookout tower will be made of a steel-wood structure, designed in a location where a circular view in all directions is available from the top of Medenec. The main highlights of the views will be the main ridge of the Krkonoš and Jizerské mountains, Kozákov, and the Černostudniční ridge," described the intent of the study's author Hilpert. The project also plans the reconstruction of part of the Kamenická trail, including viewpoints into the Jizera canyon, and the modification of hiking paths and cycling routes. In the Liberec region, there are 28 lookout towers, most of which were built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Two of them are currently inaccessible – the oldest Allain lookout near Lomnice nad Popelkou from 1862 and the lookout on Špičák near Česká Lípa from 1885. The tallest lookout tower in the region is a fifty-meter steel tower from a mobile operator in Dubecko in the Semily area. In recent years, new lookout towers have been added to the region, such as the "cucumber" in Heřmanice in Liberec or the Jára Cimrman Lighthouse in Příchovice in the Jablonec area. The Euroregion Nisa project, according to its Czech director Jaroslav Zámečník, plans to build 21 new lookout towers on the Czech and Polish sides. "The total estimated cost of the project is 320 million crowns and it primarily aims to utilize natural resources in the Czech-Polish border area to increase visitor numbers, thereby supporting employment in the regions," Zámečník told ČTK. In the Liberec region, new viewpoints are expected to be constructed, for example, on Světlý vrch in Albrechtice in the Jizerské mountains, on Čertův vrch in Harrachov, or in Bílý Potok in the Jizerské mountains.
