Prague - Today, a new building of the Czech Institute of Informatics, Robotics and Cybernetics (CIIRC) of the Czech Technical University (CTU) was ceremonially opened in Prague's Dejvice. The educational and research center is expected to function as a central workplace for cutting-edge science across technical disciplines. It aims to support the digitization of industry, which is one of the current government's priorities.
The opening was attended by CTU Rector Petr Konvalinka, CIIRC Director Vladimír Mařík, and other academics, as well as President Miloš Zeman and Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka (CSSD).
The Prime Minister reminded that the Czech Republic is an industrial country and that the current digitization is changing the industry. "How well we manage the digitization process will indicate whether we will remain a competitive country in the future," he stated.
Around 140 employees will move into the building, which cost approximately 1.5 billion crowns, and by the end of May, the CTU rectorate will also relocate there. In five years, about 350 employees could work in the building. CIIRC aims to attract new employees from among scientists both domestically and internationally. The building's facilities can accommodate up to 1,650 people, so many students are also expected.
The CIIRC was established in July 2013. Its employees had previously worked at various CTU locations in Prague. The construction of the modern low-energy building began in November 2014. The five-story building of the original Technical canteen on Jugoslávských partyzánů Street was converted into a seven-story structure, expanding its footprint.
CTU sought funding for the project from European grants under the Operational Program Research and Development for Innovations, but due to the project's complexity and tight deadlines, the government ultimately provided funding from the state budget. The state thus paid one billion crowns, while CTU contributed approximately 400 million.
