Prague - Construction has begun on new stations of the metro line A in Prague. Today, the city leadership, together with representatives of the transport company and construction firm, laid the foundation stone. The new section, costing almost 19 billion crowns, will run from Dejvická to Motol and is set to be operational in 2014. After that, builders are expected to continue boring additional tunnels to Václav Havel Airport, said Mayor Pavel Bém (ODS) today.

"Four years ago, we promised the construction of new metro stations on line A. Today, we are fulfilling that promise," said Bém. The extension of line A is, according to him, particularly important for Prague 6 and the area of Vítězné náměstí, from which bus traffic should decrease after completion.
On line A, new stations Červený vrch, Veleslavín, Petřiny, and Motol will be added over the next four years. The length of the Prague metro will thus increase by more than six kilometers. The construction will cost about 18.7 billion crowns, but Prague is expected to receive about eight billion crowns from European Union funds. The contract from the transport company was awarded to a consortium of Metrostav and Hochtief CZ.
In the future, the extension of line A to Václav Havel Airport is planned, passing through the stops Bílá Hora, Dědina, Dlouhá Míle, and Staré letiště. The city hall expects this section to be operational by 2018.
