Prague - The Municipal Library of Prague (MKP) will open two new branches this year. The Great Mill in Libeň in Prague 8 and in Petřiny in Prague 6. The Great Mill is expected to open by June this year, with adaptations to the space currently underway. The library in Petřiny is planned to open in the autumn. This was announced by MKP spokesperson Lenka Hanzlíková. The investor is the Great Mill Association and the Municipal Library of Prague.

The library in Löwit’s Mill in Prague 8 should have opened last year, but work on adapting the space is still ongoing. "The postponement of the deadline is precisely due to the adaptation adjustments, which have turned out to be more complicated than expected, especially due to the age of the building,” explained Hanzlíková.

In the former mill located in the Libeň castle district, there will be a library branch, a reading room, an exhibition hall, and a café. The library will offer readers about 5,000 volumes. The establishment of the branch will cost approximately ten million crowns.

The construction of the new library in Petřiny will cost MKP 226 million crowns. "The opening of the library will be a significant event for Prague librarianship; the last time a building constructed specifically for library services was opened in Prague was in 2009 (the National Technical Library),” stated Hanzlíková.

The new library will offer spaces for sitting with a book, club rooms suitable for meetings of civic interest groups, and areas for collaborative work or study. The building will also include a multifunctional hall with the possibility of film screenings, concerts, lectures, and theater performances. The ground floor will connect to a garden, which will provide readers with additional options for use.

The library, established by the capital city, is the largest public library in the Czech Republic in terms of the number of readers and loans made. Its library collection is the third largest in the Czech Republic after the National Library and the Moravian Library in Brno.
