Kladno - In the renovated Kladno barracks, classrooms for the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering of the Czech Technical University (FBMI CTU), which is based in Kladno, have been established. The building will accommodate up to 1,000 students, and dozens to a hundred school employees will have facilities there. This was stated by the faculty dean, Jozef Rosina, to ČTK. The city renovated the barracks for about 70 million crowns and will lease them to the faculty under a contract for five years. Most of the funding was acquired from European subsidies. Approximately 1,700 students of the faculty are currently studying in Kladno.
Work on the complete reconstruction of the former Kladno barracks Lidice began in 2013. Two new lecture halls were created there, each for 150 students, along with many dozens of classrooms and offices. "Two study programs will move into the building: specializations in healthcare and population protection," the dean stated. The programs include fields such as physiotherapy, emergency medical services, health laboratory technician, or crisis situation planning and management.
About 400 employees work at the faculty. New jobs will be created according to Rosina, particularly in positions such as gatekeepers, cleaners, and food services. "Thanks to the city's understanding and the lease of the new building, we can accredit new fields and expand the study offer, thus creating new positions for teachers, secretariats, and so on," the dean added. Still this year, the offer of fields should be expanded by two, a five-year master's program that will develop knowledge of the use of nanotechnology and nanomaterials for medicine, and a second bachelor's program that will develop knowledge of remote transmission of health data, known as telemedicine.
"We thank the city for being willing to bring the faculty to Kladno and for always being willing to listen to us, and we want to bring up to 3,000 students, several hundred teachers, and employees to the city," said the dean, who would also like the city to understand the faculty not only as a "large enterprise," but that the university enriches the city mentally, as students participate in sports and cultural events in the city, largely live in Kladno, commute there, and spend money in the city.
In the barracks area, a university campus could also be established in the coming years for over 500 million crowns. The faculty is currently awaiting the announcement of calls for grant applications. "The university campus was 'drawn' by students of the Faculty of Architecture; the placement of all classrooms for teaching, teachers' offices, and staff rooms has been planned. It can be said that the building is ready on our side," informed the dean.
The Faculty of Biomedical Engineering is located in Kladno near Sítná Square. The building is now being renovated for about 45 million crowns, with work expected to be completed by April 10.
The Faculty of Biomedical Engineering of CTU in Prague, based in Kladno, is the only public university in the Central Bohemian Region. It was established in 2005 by transforming the Institute of Biomedical Engineering.
