Prague - This May, a year after the construction began, a four-story parking garage will be completed in Prague's Prosek. It will offer a total of 378 parking spaces. The construction costs are 110 million crowns, and the capital city supported the project in Prague 9 with 17 million crowns. City district spokesperson Marie Kurková shared this information with ČTK today.
"By constructing this parking garage, we aimed to help primarily the residents in Prosek in the area of Jablonecká and Prosecká streets, where there is a critical shortage of parking spaces. Parking spots in the garage will not be sold to individual interested parties, as they are not garages, but motorists will be able to use them for a small fee,” said the city district councilor for transport, Tomáš Holeček (ODS).
The parking garage is being built on the site of the existing parking lot at the Billa shopping center. It will connect with the store via a pedestrian corridor. The city district obtained a building permit in the summer of 2017, four years after the start of the permitting process.
The shortage of parking spaces is one of the long-term issues of the metropolis. To protect residents' parking, parking zones have been established in some city districts. This measure aims to defend against drivers who commute to the city for work and occupy spaces designated for Prague residents. There are P+R parking lots designated for commuters, but there is a shortage of them in the capital.
Prague 9 is also striving to introduce parking zones to protect local residents, as the introduction of zones in neighboring districts has worsened parking availability here. The city hall would like to establish a mixed zone throughout its territory, where non-residents could also park for a fee. Through the introduction of zones, the city district aims to protect residents and enable parking for their family members, customers, and contractors.
