Brno - Masaryk University today began building another part of the university campus in Brno-Bohunice. The construction of a pavilion and two sports halls for the Faculty of Sports Studies will cost 300 million crowns. The school has also issued the third tender for other parts of the campus. This was made possible by the Ministry of Finance's decision to cover exchange rate losses on a loan from the European Investment Bank. The ministry will spend 400 million crowns on the losses, said school spokeswoman Tereza Fojtová today to ČTK. Due to problems with exchange rate losses, the completion of the campus has been postponed to 2010, and the builders paused work for six months. The European Investment Bank provided 95 million euros (now about 2.4 billion crowns) for the campus. Both the state and university budget operate in crowns, and the price of the euro has dropped significantly in the last five years. According to the contract with the bank, the state was supposed to cover the loss from its budget, but negotiations were prolonged until the current assumption of the obligation by the Ministry of Finance. Delays will likely increase the construction costs. In addition to exchange rate losses, inflation and rising construction prices are likely to increase the budget as well. "The exact increase will only be possible to determine based on the results of the new tender," said university treasurer Ladislav Janíček. The school is prepared to release 200 million crowns from its own resources. In addition to the pavilion and sports facilities for the Faculty of Social Studies, there are still nine more buildings to be completed in the campus for the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Science, along with shared teaching spaces and laboratories. Two tenders have already been held for several objects. The first was canceled by the school due to unfavorable price offers. After the second tender, the university was satisfied with the prices, but due to unresolved issues with exchange rate losses, it could not finalize contracts with the builders, who in the meantime lost interest in the contracts. According to the original plans, the remaining buildings were expected to cost the school about 1.75 billion crowns. The construction of the university campus is one of the largest current construction projects in Brno. It will serve primarily medicine, natural sciences, and sports studies. The school began constructing the campus in 2004. The complex is intended for 5,000 students and 750 university staff. The original project estimated the total costs at 5.1 billion crowns. The costs are shared by the university, the state, and the city.
