Adolf Loos

Jihlava - A selection of works by the famous Brno architect Adolf Loos can be viewed by visitors today at the Gustav Mahler House in Jihlava. More than thirty buildings, as well as interiors designed by Loos, are captured in color photographs by Walter Zednicek. The exhibition, organized by the city in cooperation with the Austrian Cultural Forum and the civic association Iglauer Regionalkulturverband, is a complementary event to the cross-border Lower Austrian regional exhibition, said Irena Wagnerová, the deputy mayor.
Adolf Loos, whose parents were from Jihlava, was a vigorous opponent of Jugendstil, or the Vienna Secession. Its proponent was Josef Hoffmann, who was born in Brtnice near Jihlava and a classmate of Loos. Loos was a critic of applied arts and artistic movements attempting to link craftsmanship with everyday consumer goods. He opposed any decorations on functional objects and houses.
Loos's work can be seen not only in Brno, Prague, and Austria but also in France and Switzerland. In 1910, he built his first and most famous work - the so-called Loos House at Michalské Square opposite the Hofburg in Vienna, which sparked heated debate due to its austere facade. Allegedly, even Emperor Franz Joseph I. refused to look out the window toward Michalské Square because of Loos's house.
Loos was born in Brno in 1870 as the son of a stonemason from Jihlava. He studied at the gymnasium in Jihlava, state schools in Liberec and Brno, the Technical University in Dresden, and the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Otto Wagner. He stayed in the USA and settled permanently in Vienna in 1896, where he began working as a journalist and architect. He died in 1933.
Viennese photographer Walter Zednicek has been documenting Viennese architecture from the early 20th century for many years. He often succeeds in obtaining permission from current owners to take pictures of interiors that are usually hidden from architecture admirers.
The exhibition "The Works of Adolf Loos in the Photographs of Walter Zednicek" will be on display at the Gustav Mahler House in Jihlava until March 31.
