Brno - The situation with parking in the Brno housing estate of Vinohrady is set to improve. A private investor is expected to build a parking house on Věstonická Street. According to Deputy Mayor Jiří Karásek (ČSSD), the land belongs to the city and is considered as a parking location in the city zoning plan. The building will use an automatic system, so the driver will drive onto a ramp and a robot will transport the car to a specific parking space. Inside, there will be 60 spaces, the mayor told ČTK. According to Karásek, the last thing needed for construction is the city’s approval. If the local administration grants it, the building could be completed within a year, according to the deputy mayor. Another automated parking house is planned to be built on Kopečná Street in the city center. The Vinohrady town hall has identified eight locations where parking houses could potentially be built. However, Karásek noted that it has proven problematic to find land that is legally free and uncontaminated by restitution claims. According to the council representatives, parking houses are the only solution for car owners residing in the housing estate. Vinohrady has 15,000 residents, and thousands more parking spaces are needed than currently exist in the district. "It's a daily battle. The time you can park is getting shorter, and the problems with where cars are parked are getting worse," recently described Deputy Mayor Jiří Pustina (ODS). As a result, cars are parked wherever possible, which has drawn criticism from, for example, firefighters. There are also parking problems in other Brno housing estates. The situation is handled in various ways; in many places, parking areas are being built at the expense of green space, while elsewhere the implementation of a residential parking system is being considered. However, others claim that it is impossible to ever satisfy the demand for parking spaces, as the number of cars is increasing faster than available parking spots. Many residents of estates may have five or six cars in their family, said Vinohrady Mayor Jiří Čejka (ČSSD).
