Beroun - In the center of Beroun, a new paved square is expected to be established in the future. The town hall aims to create a relaxation zone with a water feature at the former site of destruction between Biřická and Česká streets, with funding from the European Union. The total costs amount to 8.5 million, with the EU contribution representing 4.5 million, said Deputy Mayor Tomáš Havel (ODS) to ČTK. According to him, the square should bear the name of the French geologist and paleontologist Joachim Barrande.

"Next door is Dusl's villa, so the connections are evident. We expect it to become a vibrant space. There will be seating, benches, and trees to create a pleasant environment," added Havel.
Barrande (1799 to 1883) gained worldwide fame for exploring geological formations and fossils in Central Bohemia, which he revealed as a unique site of Paleozoic relics. He spent many years in Prague and donated his collection of more than 300,000 fossils to the National Museum. During his stay in Bohemia, he also interacted with the Beroun burgher and wealthy merchant Martin Dusl, who was a passionate patron and amateur paleontologist. The French scientist assisted Dusl in identifying the collected materials.
The results of the systematic research work that he devoted 44 years of his life to were summarized by Barrande in the monumental work "Silur of Central Bohemia," published simultaneously in Prague and Paris.
