Brno - The Masaryk University Campus in Brno-Bohunice, one of the largest and most expensive projects in the academic field in recent years, is on the brink of completion. There is less than a month left until full operation begins. Most of the departments have already moved from various locations in Brno to the new buildings. The university has scheduled the official opening for September 23, spokesperson Tereza Fojtová told ČTK today.
Interested parties can view the entire campus on the internet. The virtual tour will take visitors to the new auditorium, library, sports hall, academic restaurant, offering a view from the connecting bridge as well as the entire area.
For September 23, the university is preparing a celebration with a program for the public. After the official ribbon-cutting, people can stroll through the area. The entertainment program includes musical and dance performances. "A significant event not only in the history of Masaryk University will culminate with an evening concert," Fojtová stated.
The university campus in Bohunice consists of a total of 24 teaching and research pavilions. It includes an information center with a library and study rooms, a teaching center with an auditorium and lecture halls, and a sports hall. The campus will serve approximately 5,000 students and 1,000 educators and researchers from the medical faculty, faculty of science, and faculty of sports studies.
The total cost of the campus construction reached 4.972 billion crowns. The project is funded from the state budget supported by a loan from the European Investment Bank, the own resources of Masaryk University, and funds from the city of Brno. Construction began in 2003. The first buildings of the campus were put into operation in 2005, with additional ones in 2007 and 2009.
A number of other related scientific, research, and academic institutions are expected to gradually grow around the campus, with plans for the development of services as well. The city council of Brno will soon discuss a change in the zoning plan that will allow for the introduction of a tram line and trolleybus lines to the campus. Currently, the campus is only accessible by bus.
