Opava - The Opava city hall wants to build a large parking garage near the eastern train station, where there is a shortage of parking spaces. The costs of the project will reach up to 35 million Czech crowns. The city has completed the study. It is now investigating whether it will receive a subsidy for the construction. Deputy Mayor Josef Stiborský (KDU-ČSL) told ČTK this. It is not yet clear when construction will begin; temporarily, several new parking spaces are supposed to partially solve the parking problem.

The parking garage is expected to have a capacity of around 170 spaces. It will be built near the station on Sladištní Street. The building will be connected to the train station by an underpass. "We are currently negotiating with the Ministry of Transport regarding suitable subsidies. Additionally, we have already requested the transfer of the necessary land, which is currently owned by the Railway Transport Administration," said the deputy. The project will also include the modification of surrounding areas. There will be an additional 100 parking spaces. The project will also contain bicycle parking, connections to bike paths and pedestrian trails.

Currently, there are only three parking spaces in front of Opava East station. "We often receive complaints from travelers," Stiborský said. The city wants to temporarily address this situation by creating new spaces in an area currently designated for the parking of replacement buses during disruptions. By the end of February, nine new parking spaces will be added there.
