A shopping center was built at the new university campus in Brno

Brno - In the close vicinity of the new campus of Masaryk University in Brno-Bohunice, a new commercial complex Campus Square has commenced operations today. It includes 50 establishments over a total area of approximately 22,000 square meters. Private investors aim to attract not only university students but also residents of the densely populated Bohunice and Nový Lískovec neighborhoods, employees of the nearby Faculty Hospital in Brno, and workers of the new regional archive.
Masaryk University, whose billion-dollar campus sparked a construction boom in this part of Brno, welcomes the establishment of the shopping center. It brings better facilities and more dining options for both students and researchers. "Something like this has been planned near the campus from the very beginning, but of course, it is a matter that had to be taken on by a private investor, not the university," said Tereza Fojtová, spokesperson for the school, to ČTK.
According to Fojtová, the university is considering establishing a cafeteria for staff and students in the shopping center. Negotiations with the owners of the commercial spaces have not yet concluded, and it is unclear whether the plans will come to fruition.
Near the Campus Square shopping center, builders have also started work on two office buildings. According to developers, it is possible that more commercial spaces will be built in the area in the future, depending on the demand for office space. Due to the construction between Jihlavská and Bítešská streets, a new access road has also been created.
The locality in Bohunice has been significantly revitalized in recent years by the university campus for 5,000 students and 750 university teachers and researchers, which began construction in 2004. Total costs will exceed five billion crowns, and the school plans to complete it by 2010. Private investments around the campus are not precisely quantified.
