Trutnov - The city of Trutnov today began construction of a community center and theater for 480 million Czech crowns. This is the most significant building in the thirty-three-thousand-strong city in several decades. The new construction will rise on the site of the former bus station and will become a new landmark of the Republic Square. The center, half of which will be funded by European Union grants, aims to open in 2010. "The construction is the fulfillment of the dream of the people of Trutnov for their own theater and cultural hall. The center should be lively every day. Not like many stone theaters that are closed except for Friday and Saturday," said Trutnov Mayor Ivan Adamec. According to him, people from the entire surrounding region and the Krkonoš Mountains will utilize the center. The new building will provide space for theatrical performances, entertainment programs, concerts, social evenings, and balls. Various activities will be organized by clubs, non-profit organizations, youth organizations, and schools. It will also be able to host city council meetings, meetings of political parties, conferences, and symposia of commercial entities, trade unions, or professional associations. The main hall, with a capacity of 390 to 640 spectators, can be adjusted for classical theater, conferences, or balls. The spaces on the first floor will be adjustable to connect or divide into six club rooms or one hall as needed. The second floor will have two large rehearsal rooms, while the third floor will be occupied by offices and facilities for sound engineers, lighting technicians, and interpreters. There will also be two cafes for visitors, and approximately 70 parking spaces will be available in the basement. The center will be built by the Trutnov construction company BAK, which was the only applicant in the contractor competition. In addition to the EU grant of 190 million crowns, the main sources of financing will be a loan and the city’s own funds. According to Adamec, it is not excluded that the city will also obtain funds from other grant sources and from a public collection. He noted that the city has been practically debt-free since April, and the loan for the theater will not limit its development in the coming years.
