Brno - The retail chain Tesco Stores wants to build a shopping gallery in the center of Brno, near the main railway station. It should adjoin the existing Tesco department store building from the east and occupy the area currently occupied by a parking lot, an Asian bistro, and a children's and youth house. The company has now submitted the project to the regional authority, which is to assess the intention in terms of environmental impact. The media representative of the company refused to disclose the amount of the planned investment, stating that it is a trade secret. The construction is to include, in addition to a three-story shopping gallery with an area of over 7,000 square meters, also parking terraces. The investor wants to partially reconstruct the current Tesco building. According to Tesco's media representative Eva Karasová, the new shopping gallery will likely be built in "a horizon of approximately three to five years." "We cannot specify the amount of our investments for business reasons," she added. The place where the gallery is to be created features a pedestrian communication route that connects the main railway station with the Vaňkovka shopping gallery and the main bus station Zvonařka. "The primary focus in the design of the shopping gallery was on this space. This passage is transformed in the proposed plan into a three-story covered shopping street that connects different height levels through a system of escalators," it is stated in the proposal. The project's plans explicitly mention that "within the construction of the new shopping gallery, the existing House of Children and Youth will be demolished." However, according to Karasová, there are currently no specific plans for the demolition of the youth center. "If demolition were to occur in the future, we would replace the children's house with another facility in the immediate vicinity," she added. Lenka Skokanová, the director of the House of Children and Youth in Dornych, told ČTK that she is aware of Tesco's project, but she is against any relocation of the center for children and youth to another location. "Although the building is owned by the region, we hope that the region will support us. The transport service is excellent here, so children from all over the region, including those outside Brno, use the house," she added. Tesco Stores operates seven stores in Brno, including department stores, hypermarkets, and supermarkets.
