Tachov

Tachov – Tachov will start a complete reconstruction of the central Republic Square in mid-May for 82 million crowns excluding VAT. The thirteen-thousand-strong town plans to open the revitalized area to locals and visitors in the summer of next year. The square will undergo significant improvements after about half a century. CTK was informed today by Mayor Petr Vrána (I vote for Tachov).

Among the six bidders, the construction company Gardenline s.r.o. from Litoměřice won, which has very good references according to Vrána. "The last project they completed is, coincidentally, Tachov Square in Prague," he said. The construction work will be followed by another company with a landscaping project developed by a landscape architect. According to Deputy Mayor Jan Straka (For a Better Tachov), the city has 77 million CZK allocated in this year’s budget for the adjustments of the large area, including the restoration of the Marian Column and connections to adjacent streets.

According to Vrána, everything in the square will be new, including the engineering networks. "The raised pedestrian zone will disappear, and the square will have a more compact surface. Most of the area will be covered with classic paving, except for the most common pedestrian paths made of large-format stones," he said. A replica of the Marian Column, which was destroyed at the beginning of the 1970s, will return to its original place. The surroundings will be adorned with new sculptures.

"We will maintain the number of trees on the northern and eastern sides, and additional trees will be added in the lower part. However, the species composition will change," said Vrána. There will be parking spaces in the square and two larger bays for short-term parking.

The concept for the reconstruction of the wide city center, a city heritage zone, began to take shape in 2000. The reconstruction of Hradební and Kostelní streets, as well as Blood Alley is complete, and now the square will be addressed, followed by K. H. Borovský, Rokycanova, and Vodní streets, which are being designed.

"We must complete the construction by the summer of 2025, as closing the square for a year would pose a major complication regarding operations in the center and even for city festivities," the mayor said. Tachov has saved money in its reserve fund and will not take out a loan. "Additionally, we have already received back 60 million crowns in subsidies that we obtained for the reconstruction of the riding hall in Světce," he stated. According to him, there are no grant titles for the reconstruction of the square area; the city will try to obtain support for the restoration of the Marian Column.
