Tábor – Tábor will be one of the first towns in the country to build a green roof on a residential panel building. It will be created over an area of nearly 500 m² on a building in Berlínská Street. The city hopes that the roof will have a longer lifespan and will also make better use of rainwater, which would otherwise drain into the sewer system. This was stated by the managing director of the city company Bytes, Ondřej Semerák, at an online press conference.

"Although the installation of a green roof is slightly more expensive than a classic reconstruction, the advantage is that the lifespan of the roof is estimated to be up to 50 years, as UV radiation cannot damage the roofing. Of course, there will be better climate insulation properties in the summer months, as well as better rainwater management," he said. The apartment building on Berlínská Street is owned by the city, and its maintenance is provided by Bytes. Semerák noted that due to the condition of the roof, the company would have to reconstruct it in the near future. He mentioned that the costs of the project amount to approximately four million korunas. Work on the roof is expected to begin in the coming weeks. "The installation must be completed in spring to allow the plants to take root. We expect that the roof will be completely finished in two to three months," he added.

The vegetation on the surface will primarily consist of a specific type of grass that will be resistant to the encroachment of foreign plants, bushes, or trees, such as mainly birches. Semerák added that the roof will not normally be accessible to the residents of the building or to other people because the area is not secured by a railing. "There will be no pathways; we see other advantages rather than just recreational benefits," Semerák said.

The green roof, due to its ability to capture rainwater, will relieve the sewage system, and at the same time, by evaporating the captured water through the leaves of the plants, it will cool and humidify the surroundings. In addition, it cools the interior space and, to some extent, its surroundings and reduces the amount of airborne dust.
