Ostrava - Ostrava wants to have three urban planning and architectural studies carried out to map the biggest barriers in the city. The studies should show which buildings make the city impassable, complicated, or even unsuitable for living. This was stated today by Mayor Petr Kajnar (ČSSD) to journalists.
The studies mapping public space should initially focus on three areas of the city: its central part and also two most populous city districts, Jih and Poruba. The city will pay approximately one million crowns for the studies, which should be completed by the end of this year.
"From a historical perspective, the view on the functions of the city and what people need is changing. There is development occurring in those areas, and also transportation is becoming increasingly complicated and intense. We want to identify problematic areas and the barriers that hinder the use of the city. We want to mark them and propose solutions so that the city is created in a way that is as pleasant as possible for its residents in the long term," noted Kajnar.
According to him, one example of a barrier in the city is Upper Street in the Jih district. "That is a typical path that is a real barrier between one part and the other in Jih; it feels like living in a different city," said Kajnar, who believes that there are quite a few of these problematic places in Ostrava. The city has commissioned the individual studies from different architects because it wants to gain a broader perspective on this issue.
