Liberec - An apartment building in Staré Splavy near Lake Mácha has become the winner of the 14th annual Construction of the Year competition in the Liberec Region. In an internet poll conducted for the regional Construction of the Century, a hotel and transmitter on Ještěd Mountain in Liberec won. The results were announced by the Liberec Region today; the competition has been held since 2004.

"The purpose is to express support for everyone creating useful and beautiful buildings," said the chairwoman of the jury and regional councilor Radka Loučková Kotasová (ANO) during the announcement of the results. Last year, the jury did not award any main prize; two years ago, the construction of the year was the sports and recreational area Maškova zahrada in Turnov.

This year, six buildings and four student works were entered into the competition. The main category was won by the recently completed cooperative building LakePark Residence for 80 million without tax. It combines permanent housing and apartments for short-term rentals for vacationers coming to Lake Mácha. The structured building with 37 apartments was built on a site where a pit from a partly constructed guesthouse had been for about 20 years. According to architect Monika Čížková from EBM Expert Building Management, representatives from the city did not believe for two years that they would build something there. "They said there had probably been about five such projects here. When it started to rise, the locals were excited to get rid of the ugly hole in the middle of the village," she added.

In the public voting, the cycle path between Nový Bor and Svora in the Českolipsko region received the most votes. The construction of the more than three-kilometer section in the Protected Landscape Area of the Lužické Mountains cost over 13 million crowns. This project also won a partial category with the jurors, as did the reconstruction of the ceremonial hall at the Forest Cemetery in Nový Bor, which cost nearly ten million. Among students, awards were given today to Josef Dvořák and Ondřej Samko from the Integrated Secondary School in Semily for their work titled "Spiral Staircase with a Glazed Wall".

As part of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Czechoslovakia, the region also announced a survey for the best building that has been constructed in the Liberec Region from the beginning of the 20th century to the present. The unique structure on Ještěd received the most votes in the online poll. The rotating hyperboloid with a hotel and transmitter, completed in 1973, is a national cultural monument. Years ago, it was chosen by people in a national poll as the Czech building of the 20th century.

In the regional poll, the second place went to the defunct Ještěd department store, which used to stand in the center of Liberec. The third was the František Josef I Spa in Liberec, which has been converted into a gallery where the competition announcement for the building of the year took place today.
