The Building of the Year in the Hradec Králové Region is the Senior Home in Opočno

Hradec Králové – The title of Building of the Year for the Hradec Králové Region 2022 was awarded today to the conversion of an unused hospital building into a senior residence in Opočno in the Rychnov region. The investor for the construction, which cost more than 100 million crowns, was the region. This year's 19th edition of the competition featured 19 entries from builders, investors, and architects, three more than last year, according to the regional office, which is the main organizer of the competition.

The senior residence in Opočno was designed by the company Projecticon from Nový Hrádek in Náchod, and the construction was carried out by the construction company Valc from Hradec Králové. The building previously housed a maternity ward and surgery. During the renovation, the building received an extension of a third floor, a flat roof instead of a gable roof, and the designers significantly changed the internal layout. The capacity of the building is 47 beds.

The jury awarded the Building of the Year title in the transportation infrastructure category to the reconstruction of Main Street in the area near the observatory in Hradec Králové. Honorable mention was given today by the expert jury to the creators of the Domašín bypass in the Rychnov region and the Nerudovka residential building in Nové Město nad Metují. A special jury prize was awarded to the new elementary school building in Černíkovice in the Rychnov region. The Ministry of Industry and Trade award went to the authors of the residential building Cihlovka in Hradec Králové.

Buildings from the Hradec Králové region often make a mark at the national level. The reconstruction of the Gallery of Modern Art in Hradec Králové won the title Building of the Year in the Czech Republic in 2017. The Kuks hospital reconstruction received the Building of the Year award in 2016, the Komenského bridge in Jaroměř in 2015, and the cable car to Sněžka in 2014. In previous years, this title was also awarded to the Uffo cultural center in Trutnov, the Regiocentrum Nový pivovar regional seat complex, and the Hradec Králové study and scientific library building.

The organizers of the regional Building of the Year competition, alongside the Hradec Králové Region, include the Czech Chamber of Authorized Engineers and Technicians in Construction, the Czech Union of Civil Engineers, the Union of Entrepreneurs in Construction, and the Czech Chamber of Architects. The competition is a non-advancing counterpart to the national Building of the Year competition.
