Ostrava - The Railway Administration (SŽ) has announced a tender for the reconstruction of the train station building in Ostrava-Vítkovice. The aim is a comprehensive restoration of the building and a new arrangement of internal layouts with an emphasis on commercial use. The estimated value of the public contract is over 340 million crowns, and the total investment costs will exceed 400 million crowns. This was stated by SŽ spokesperson Dušan Gavenda.
Construction is expected to begin in April next year, with completion in two years. "The work will also include extensive renovation of the outer shell, consisting of so-called ‘boletické panels’. Improvement of the area in front of the station is also planned," Gavenda stated.
The station is located on the so-called Polanecká connection, which links the Ostrava stations of Svinov and Kunčice. The building was constructed in the 1960s in the so-called Brussels style and is a masterpiece of architect Josef Danda. However, for the current railway needs, the building is oversized and has been deteriorating for years. In 2020, the Ministry of Culture declared the station building a cultural monument.
"The reconstruction will significantly increase comfort for passengers while also creating new spaces for commercial use. We will focus on both the exterior and the interior of the building. Windows and the outer shell will be replaced, utilizing modern and aesthetically appropriate materials," said SŽ General Director Jiří Svoboda.
The building will be insulated from the inside to avoid disturbing the facade areas with the original cladding. "The interior renovation of the building will be carried out in accordance with heritage conservation requirements, preserving existing materials and artistic decorations," the spokesperson stated.
In the ground floor of the renovated building, there will be offices and ticket counters of the transport providers, an information stand for the city of Ostrava, social facilities for employees, and technological spaces. "There will also be a new waiting room for passengers. The other two above-ground floors will create spaces for shops and services, as well as offices. A lift will ensure barrier-free access to the platforms, and the station will receive a new orientation and information system," Gavenda stated. Parking areas for cars and bike racks, including charging stations, will be created near the station.
The spokesperson added that modernization is also expected for the train station itself and the relevant sections of the railway track. "The start of this investment is planned for the second half of 2026, with completion in 2029," Gavenda stated.
