Brno - The Citizen Coalition of the Train Station in the City Center has started collecting signatures from people who wish to preserve the Brno train station in the city center. The association is striving for the South Moravian Region to allow such a variant in its zoning plan. The train station is scheduled to be relocated, but the coalition wants to gain a so-called public representative who would advocate the opposite during the discussions regarding the regional zoning plan. It needs 500 signatures for this purpose, the coalition stated today in a press release. The format of the new regional zoning plan is being discussed with the public, and the representatives should approve it in June. If they do, it will come into effect in July. According to the coalition, the relocation of the train station will be costly and it will not be possible to obtain funds from the European Union for it. "The project does not meet the basic conditions for grant allocation. The region must reckon with the fact that the station will not be relocated," Jan Toufar stated on behalf of the coalition in a press release. Regional councilor David Macek (KDU-ČSL), who is responsible for preparing the new zoning plan, rejected the coalition's objections today. According to him, proponents of having a station in the center did not succeed in placing their goal into any of the three variants of the Brno zoning plan concept. The region and Brno are said to be striving to obtain European funds in the next planning period of the European Union. According to the coalition, the relocation will worsen travel conditions for people from the region who travel by the most eco-friendly public transport, that is by rail. "On average, the journey will be extended by seven to 15 minutes. Many of them may then choose to drive for faster transport," Toufar stated. Macek rejected this. According to him, the preparation of the new Brno zoning plan shows that the city will primarily develop to the south, where it is said that more jobs should be created. When the train station is moved just under a kilometer south, it will still be on the edge of the broader center of Brno, according to Macek. He described the location as advantageous for both locals and commuters. "Moreover, there is the advantage that the station can be built in an area where it will not overly interfere with the functioning of the city," Macek said, adding that otherwise, people would have to wear rubber boots for several years while traveling through the city center.
