Prague - The First Republic functionalist colony Baba will be reconstructed. The surfaces of the roads will be restored, technical infrastructure will be upgraded, and a new information system for tourists will be created. The leadership of the Prague City Hall has already approved the study according to which the colony will be repaired. Marek Vácha, spokesperson for the Institute of Planning and Development (IPR), which prepared the study for the city, announced this today. Baba was built at the turn of the 20th and 30th years of the 20th century.

"Although Baba is a significant and monumentally protected area and the architecture is very well preserved here, the public spaces have lost their original charm over the decades, have deteriorated, and a complete renewal is being prepared. The conceptual study was developed primarily to coordinate all interests in the area, therefore the monument, architectural-urbanistic, and the interest of local residents," said Deputy Mayor Petr Hlaváček (TOP 09).

In addition to repairing the surfaces of the roads, squares, and reconstructing the infrastructure, a new rainwater management system will be created. Pedestrian paths will be barrier-free, improving pedestrian connections to neighboring parts of the city. The study also recommended creating an information center and an educational trail that will serve tourists, including a navigation system and signage for the villas. "The goal is to create such facilities for visitors to the colony so that local residents are disturbed as little as possible," Vácha stated.

Baba has been a city monument zone since 1993, and in 2020 it received, along with other functionalist colonies of Werkbund, the European Heritage label.
