Litvínov - 14 days ago, the demolition of the first of four dilapidated panel houses began in the part of the town of Litvínov in the Mostecko region in Janov, and today the demolition has been completed. A park will be built on the site of the house, which was constructed in the 1970s. This was stated today by the town's spokesperson, Jitka Pavlíková. Demolition of the other houses is planned for around September.

"Workers first had to deal with a large amount of debris, which complicated the movement of machinery," Pavlíková stated, adding that the city office placed part of the debris next to the former scrap metal yard. "Part of the debris will be used to fill basements and the site will be reclaimed so that it becomes a leisure area, simply a classic park," the spokesperson said earlier.

The city decided to demolish this and three other eight-story buildings because they are no longer repairable and pose a safety and hygiene risk. "This will be one of the first steps to restart the housing estate," Pavlíková stated.

During the demolition of the last entrance of the building, part of the wall collapsed prematurely, partially damaging a neighboring private commercial building. "There were no injuries," Pavlíková stated, adding that representatives of the company, the city office, and the town leadership are addressing this event. "The affected building was inspected by a structural engineer, who stated that there was no serious structural damage to the building," said Deputy Mayor Karel Rosenbaum (ANO).

The Janov housing estate was built in the 1970s as modern housing primarily for residents of villages that disappeared due to coal mining. In the 1990s, the city sold the apartment buildings during privatization, and new owners began moving problematic tenants into them.
