Prostějov - The Prostějov town hall is preparing to repair the monument to the Vojáček couple in the square in the historic center of the city, which was ceremoniously unveiled on March 31, 1912 and has been a cultural monument since 1958. The monument commemorates the second Czech mayor of Prostějov, Karel Vojáček, who led the city from 1892 to 1898, and his wife Karla. The city council allocated almost half a million crowns for the monument's repair. This was stated by the mayor's deputy, Jiří Pospíšil (PéVéčko).

"The proposal for the renovation of the monument came from the participatory budget. Specifically, it will involve repairing the stone bench and the metal gratings at the Vojáček couple's monument in front of the theater building," said Pospíšil. Specialists will remove lichens from the monument, which is encircled by a linden tree, clean the stone elements, and repair the warped metal gratings. Two selected restorers have been put in charge of the renovation work. "One will focus on the restoration of the metal gratings around the monument, and the other on the maintenance of the stone bench. All work should be completed by the end of June," Pospíšil stated.

Architect Jan Kotěra began designing the monument in 1910, shortly after the opening of the National House, to which the Vojáček couple significantly contributed. "At that time, the city council only requested names inscribed on a plaque and simple architecture. Based on Kotěra's proposal, the concept was changed. It was decided that bronze relief portraits of the Vojáček couple would be integrated into the memorial. The work was commissioned to the academic sculptor Bohumil Kafka. The piece was completed in November 1911," stated Prostějov chronicler Hana Bartková.

The sandstone monument is situated at the edge of a small park opposite the entrance to the theater part of the National House. The Vojáček couple bequeathed a total of 170,000 crowns for the establishment of a Czech theater in Prostějov. Considering the wages at that time, it was undoubtedly a substantial amount and became a decisive impetus for the construction of the National House, which was ceremoniously opened in Prostějov at the end of 1907. It is now a national cultural monument.
