Ústí nad Labem - The Ústí Region has begun preparations for a major reconstruction of the Dr. Edvard Beneš Bridge in Ústí. Steel nets have already been hung on the bridge to catch crumbling concrete. The local government will now select a company to prepare all necessary documentation and relevant surveys. The demanding repair is expected to cost around 200 million Czech korunas. This was stated to reporters today by Governor Oldřich Bubeníček (KSČM).

The bridge is owned by the region, which will finance the reconstruction from its budget. Last year, experts conducted a diagnostic survey that described the structural condition. According to this survey, the replacement of the reinforced concrete deck, steel parts damaged by crossbeams, and expansion devices is necessary.

The selected company will ensure documentation for the building permit and provide author supervision throughout the construction period. The bridge carries road II/613 across the Elbe River. The winner of the contract will have to perform necessary assessments, surveys, measurements, and area mapping, including the location of utility networks. They will also compare the actual condition of the roadway with the cadastral map and verify property relationships in the construction site area, including preparing documentation for the property settlement of the affected lands. The estimated value of the contract is 6.8 million korunas without VAT.

According to the governor, the actual construction work could begin in 2019. "The aim will be to ensure that city traffic on the bridge is maintained for as long as possible," the governor noted.

The Beneš Bridge connects the city center with the Střekov district and was constructed between 1934 and 1938. The banks of the Elbe are also connected in Ústí by the Mariánský Bridge, which has been serving residents since 1998, and a railway bridge.
