Prague - A memorial commemorating the Jews who waited here for transport to concentration camps during the Protectorate will begin construction in the unused Prague-Bubny railway station in September. At the beginning of September, a concert performance of the film The Shop on Main Street will take place, presented by the Symphonic Orchestra of the capital city of Prague FOK, to mark the beginning of construction. The Society for the Memorial to the Holocaust in Prague, which initiated the project, informed about this in a press release. The City Institute for Planning and Development (IPR) is preparing a study for the use of the surrounding brownfield. A large part of the land is owned by CPI Property Group.

The non-profit organization Memorial to the Holocaust in Prague has been striving to build the memorial since 2013. The reconstruction project has an exemption from the building ban that applies to the entire area of the Bubny-Zátory brownfield. According to the society's vision, the station building is to become a platform with a permanent exhibition, educational programs, seasonal exhibitions, and a space for meetings.

"This year is crucial mainly because the City Hall of Prague is entering the railway station revitalization process with already approved investment support. Therefore, we will finally be able to start the actual reconstruction of the station building into a memorial. It is planned for two years from the start of construction, which the capital city of Prague is now to undertake," said the company's director, Pavel Štingl.

According to the spokesperson for the Prague City Hall, Vít Hofman, the cornerstone should be laid this year and the first work should begin. "However, it will be necessary to complete additional documents required for construction," he informed ČTK.

The city council recently approved the preparation of a study for three million crowns, which is to propose future use for the 110-hectare Holešovice brownfield. In the land-use plan, Bubny-Zátory is designated as a so-called development area intended for construction. According to the current city's leadership, along with residential buildings, a concert hall should also be built there, and an administrative center for state officials is being considered.

According to the city leadership, construction in the area could start in four years. It is to be a coordinated construction project involving the city, state, and private investors. Architectural competitions should be announced for each building.

Bubny-Zátory, together with locations such as the Cargo Railway Station in Žižkov or the Smíchov railway station, is one of the so-called large development areas in the metropolis. The owner of part of the land, Orco Property Group, plans to build a new district with apartments, office spaces, schools, or healthcare facilities on the brownfield. A total of 1.2 million square meters of above-ground space is expected to rise here.
