Prague - Three major construction projects are being considered for Letná in Prague. A new building for the National Library, a national football stadium, and an oceanarium could be built there. Another project is already under construction, which is the northwest section of the inner car circuit. The traffic will run through a tunnel below the surface. However, it will emerge from an underground intersection onto Milady Horákové Street. Everything suggests that not all the intended constructions in Letná will be possible. It is clear for now that there will be a circuit leading through Letná. It is uncertain whether there will be any further possible constructions there. Prague councilor for urban development Martin Langmajer (ODS) definitely does not believe that the plain could support them all. "If all the buildings were to be constructed, Letná in its current form would cease to exist," Langmajer told ČTK today. The original location for the library was in the area of the tram loop. However, the winning design by Jan Kaplický triggered negative reactions among councilors, especially from the ODS. Discussions are now underway about what will happen next. Other sites in the metropolis are also being considered for the building, as well as other locations directly in Letná. Langmajer pointed out that if the library were to be on the originally considered plots, the tram loop would have to be relocated closer to the center of the plain. The reconstruction of the current Sparta stadium into a National Football Stadium with a capacity of 31,000 to 40,000 spectators is being pushed by the football association. Its chairman Vlastimil Košťál does not rule out that construction could begin as early as next year. However, the city leadership is much more skeptical. The oceanarium is planned to be created in the underground spaces of the former Stalin monument. The city is currently negotiating a lease agreement with the investor. The company that previously won the tender for the utilization of the empty spaces must also provide proof of financing for the project. "Letná might still withstand the oceanarium," Langmajer believes. However, more will be revealed only by the regulatory plan or urban study, which the plan currently lacks. The assignment for the competition is just being prepared. According to Langmajer, it must also wait for the clarification of the library's location. The assignment cannot be developed with the library and without the library, Langmajer added.
