Prague - Prague has entrusted the monumentally protected Rothmayer Villa in Střešovice to the management of the municipal museum. The representatives decided on this today. The museum plans to open the long-closed building next year. It wants to open an exhibition dedicated to architect Otto Rothmayer and his teacher Josip Plečnik.

The current manager has been the Gallery of the Capital City of Prague. "After discussions with the directors of both organizations, it proved to be much more practical for the villa to be operated by the museum," said today the councilor for culture Václav Novotný (TOP 09). "This will save on operational and personnel costs," he added.
Prague will entrust the monument to the museum from the beginning of May. The museum also manages the nearby Müller Villa, which offers visitor-favorite exhibitions. Both villas will form a logical whole, it is stated in today's resolution.
The long-prepared renovation of the two-story Rothmayer Villa began when it was managed by the Gallery of the Capital City of Prague. The planned costs for reconstruction and restoration work were 23 million crowns. The goal was, among other things, to remove non-original architectural changes in the monument building and return it to its appearance from the 1950s. The façade required repairs, as water was leaking in some places. Restorers focused on the wooden parts of the interior, for example.
Otto Rothmayer, a student and later collaborator of the prominent Slovenian architect Josip Plečnik, designed not only the house, including the interiors, but also the garden, its fencing, and outdoor furniture. The garden was also the site of famous photographs by photographer Josef Sudek. The Rothmayer family lived in the Střešovice villa until 2008. At that time, the architect's son sold the villa to Prague under the condition of a complete renovation and accessibility.
The renovated villa, like the Müller Villa, will serve as a so-called house museum. Smaller groups of visitors will be able to view it by prior arrangement. A ticket for both villas could be joint.
