Prague - Prague has taken a significant step towards the construction of a new wing of the City of Prague Archive in Chodovec. The materials, which envisage an investment of 640 million crowns excluding VAT, were approved by the city council today. Construction is set to begin this year and continue next year. The building will serve to archive paper and electronic documents.

The tender for the contractor was announced by Prague back in 2012, but the selection took a long time. Deputy Mayor Václav Novotný (TOP 09) recently stated in response to a query from ČTK that the council was unsure whether to build the archive for such a large amount. Subsequent analyses have shown that there is no other solution. The capacity of the current archive will be filled in two years, and many documents are stored in various locations in Prague, often in unsuitable conditions.
The new building is expected to have one underground floor and seven above-ground floors. In the new premises, digitized archives and documents will be stored, as well as paper official files. Some documents were temporarily stored in various buildings after the floods in 2002, for example, in the railway station building in Bubny or in the Clam-Gallas Palace in Mariánské náměstí. According to Novotný, the opening of this additional part of the archive will also pave the way for the long-planned renovation of the Clam-Gallas Palace.
Due to the need to preserve archives, Prague is facing further investments in the future. The law requires the city to establish a backup data storage facility. It is set to be located in Malovanka, where there will be, among other things, a control center for the Blanka tunnel complex in the future.
The City of Prague Archive is located in Chodovec alongside the State District Archive and the National Archive. Together, they form one complex.
