Prague – Prague 8 plans to build a sports hall for ball games in the area of Burešova Elementary School in the Ďáblice housing estate for 300 million crowns. The municipality recently applied for a zoning decision, and if everything goes smoothly, they would like to start construction in 2027. They aim to partially cover the costs with subsidies. Jiří Vítek (Patriots for Prague 8), the deputy mayor of Prague 8, told ČTK this.
The proposed hall, which the municipality will name after the handball coach Ján Mahora, meets the requirements for handball, volleyball, floorball, basketball, and futsal. In the mornings, the sports facility is intended to serve the students of the nearby elementary school, while in the afternoons it will be available for sports clubs and the public.
According to the announcement regarding the initiation of the zoning process, the hall is to be single-story with two inserted mezzanines for facilities and stands. "The larger part of the building consists of a multi-purpose hall for ball sports, while the smaller part of the hall is designed for three badminton courts," the document states. The construction will include a stand, clubroom, locker rooms, toilets, showers, an office, a medical room, technical facilities, and storage.
"Once the zoning decision is made, we will start addressing funding," said Vítek to ČTK. He added that the city district will seek funds from the city council and the National Sports Agency. If sufficient subsidies cannot be secured, he mentioned that involvement of the private sector through a so-called PPP project might also be considered. The design of the building emerged from an architectural competition.
