Prague - The Prague 8 district office wants to take over the management of the cemetery in Bohnice, colloquially known as the cemetery of the mad. If it succeeds, it plans to repair, among other things, the surrounding walls and the chapel. This was announced to ČTK by the office's spokesperson, Marcela Voženílková. The cemetery originally belonged to the Bohnice Psychiatric Hospital and the deceased patients were buried there; it is now owned by the state.

The cemetery is currently managed by the Office for Representation of the State in Property Matters. "At this moment, the municipality has already been invited to direct negotiations regarding the transfer of management to Prague 8," the spokesperson stated.

The area will continue to serve as a cemetery, but no new burials will take place there. One of the reasons is that the specific locations of where the deceased are buried are not known.

After the surrounding wall and chapel are repaired, the district office intends to organize guided tours for the public at the cemetery. "The cemetery of the mad is also an important green space, which, however, is not in optimal condition in several places. Therefore, we want to stabilize the mature trees here and carry out partial plantings that will enhance the unique character of this place," said Vít Céza, the chairman of the Environmental Commission.
