Prague - Prague 7 is not giving up on the plan to build a footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists that would connect Holešovice to the island of Štvanice. They want an architectural competition to determine the design of the pontoon bridge. The councilors have turned to the Institute of Planning and Development and to the city hall, which should also provide financial assistance for the construction. Lenka Burgerová, a city councilor, told ČTK this.
For people from Holešovice and, consequently, from Karlín, the bridge would mean a connection to the nearest green space. At the same time, it would enhance the environment on Štvanice. Burgerová claims that the need for connecting the banks to the island was confirmed this year by a new ferry that people quickly grew fond of. According to her, over 240 people used the boat daily during the trial operation in the summer.
Talks about building a bridge to Štvanice have been ongoing in Prague for several years. In the past, an architectural competition for a pedestrian bridge was announced, but the situation changed in 2002 due to the tragic floods. According to the city hall, it is necessary to announce a new competition.
Prague would only compete for the section between Holešovice and Štvanice. The most suitable solution is a pontoon bridge, Burgerová said. A private investor could take care of the connection between the island and the shore of Karlín, but they must build a bridge high enough in the area of the navigation channel.
