Prague - The representatives of Prague 6 will return on Friday to discuss the controversial construction of a lucrative plot of land at Vítězné náměstí, following a proposal from the opposition. The opposition wants to renegotiate the future form and function of the building that is planned to be erected on municipal land. However, it is unlikely that their proposals will be successful, as they probably will not find enough support. The leadership of the town hall, as well as the investor, persistently reject the objections.

The proposal for the multifunctional building Line, whose construction has been planned for several years between Jugoslávských partyzánů and Verdunská streets, evokes strong emotions. Part of the professional and lay public defends the project, while part rejects it. Petitions have also been created regarding this issue.
Opposition representatives from TOP 09, the Greens, and the Communists will attempt to ensure at Friday’s meeting that the city district withdraws from the change in the zoning plan concerning this plot of land. According to them, this change would relieve the investor of the obligation to partially preserve the building's public function. Furthermore, they demand adherence to established regulations regarding the height and volume of the building, which they claim the project does not respect.
However, the coalition led by Mayor Marie Kousalíková (ODS) disagrees with these arguments and continuously defends the project. Together with the investor, they assert that two floors of the administrative building will serve the public, with restaurants and shops being established among other things. They claim that the project also complies with the valid regulatory study.
The original plans from the 1990s included the construction of a new town hall in accordance with the zoning plan on the plot. However, Prague 6 ultimately backed down from this intention, opting for the reconstruction of the current headquarters and, in cooperation with PPF Real Estate, for the construction of a commercial building. Two years ago, however, they withdrew from the project due to financial reasons.
According to critics, this means they have given up the opportunity to decide what will ultimately be built on Vítězné náměstí. "The city district, with the votes of ODS and ČSSD, has renounced the possibility of influencing the architectural appearance of the building and its use," claim the Greens. In an interview with ČTK, the mayor admitted that the project, which emerged from an architectural competition, was not recommended by the expert working group. "If anything was discussed with the public, it was this plot of land," she added.
PPF Real Estate plans to start construction next year, with the building expected to be completed in 2015.
