Prague - The Prague 3 municipality will create a foundation fund that will support the construction of a new pavilion for the placement of the Slav Epic by Alphonse Mucha at Vítkov. This was decided today by the representatives of the city district. The contribution to the company is to be 100,000 crowns. The Epic is to be placed at Vítkov in a newly constructed building. In the past, several locations were discussed in Prague where the large canvases could be, for example at the Exhibition Grounds or in Letná. Mucha donated the paintings to Prague on the condition that a special space would be built for them. "The purpose of the foundation fund is to support the realization of Alphonse Mucha's pavilion on Vítkov Hill for the Slav Epic," states the resolution of the city council. The board of directors is to have five members, including the mayor Vladislava Hujová (TOP 09). Funds for the construction of the building are to come from the public.
The municipality's plan is not liked by the opposition. According to them, the placement of the paintings should be decided by Prague, not by the city district. Moreover, the opposition finds the idea that people will contribute to the construction of the building absurd.
The Epic is currently temporarily located in the Veletržní Palace, where it will remain until the end of this year. It will then go on a tour of Asia, which, however, some experts and the painter's relative John Mucha criticize. Mayor Adriana Krnáčová (ANO) disagrees with their concerns. It is currently unclear when the artwork will return to the Czech Republic. Moravský Krumlov is also striving for its return, where the canvases were exhibited for many years in the castle.
The cycle of canvases depicting Slavic mythology is included in the list of cultural monuments.
