Prague - Architect Petr Hlaváček will receive the Honorary Award of the Czech Chamber of Architects (ČKA) for the year 2022. Since 2000, the chamber has been honoring distinguished personalities in architecture. The award ceremony will take place at the nomination evening of the Czech Architecture Award on June 27, 2023. The chamber's spokesperson Tereza Zemanová informed ČTK today. Hlaváček is currently the Deputy Mayor of Prague for spatial and strategic development for the STAN movement.

The jury unanimously agreed to award Hlaváček, as he "has long-term, systematic, and with great personal commitment, created conditions for the emergence of quality urbanism and architecture, and thus building culture in Prague and through its example and influence in the whole of our country".

The jurors highlighted that in his roles as first the director of the Institute of Planning and Development of the Capital City of Prague (IPR) and later the first deputy mayor of Prague for spatial development and zoning plan, he "ensured that urbanism, architecture, and the city have become topics of political discussion again and that it has become a discussion about culture and with culture". Hlaváček contributed to the establishment of IPR and "following political pressures, to stabilize its position and importance, which also applies to Prague's building regulations," stated the jury.

Petr Hlaváček is an architect and urban planner. Since 2018, he has been working at the Prague City Hall as the deputy for spatial and strategic development. He studied architecture at the Czech Technical University in Prague (ČVUT) and in 1991 co-founded the R.U.A studio with Hana Seho-Münzová. He currently leads the office under the name Architekti Headhand. Since 1990, with breaks, he has worked as an educator at ČVUT in Prague, where he also held the position of Vice-Dean for Development for several years. Together with his wife Magdalena Hlaváčková, he led a studio for first-year students for five years. At the Faculty of Architecture of ČVUT, he is also involved in the City Development workshop focused on the relationships between architects, developers, and clients.

From 2015 to 2016, he was the director of IPR, and since 2018 he has been a representative of the capital city of Prague. Since the beginning of 2023, as the Deputy Mayor of Prague for spatial and strategic development for the STAN movement, he continues with ongoing projects. In his architectural practice, he focuses both on the overall urban concept and the creation and definition of public space, as well as on details with an emphasis on quality and the needs of the whole. While working for the city, he utilizes this and places particular emphasis on agreement in the territory. He perceives the city as a complex mechanism, a machine in which all parts must work for the whole, stated the chamber.

Among the laureates of the ČKA Honorary Award are Eva Jiřičná, Martin Rajniš, Věra Machoninová, Rostislav Švácha, Emil Přikryl, Alena Šrámková, Miroslav Masák, and Karel Hubáček. In memoriam, the award was given to Bohuslav Fuchs, Karel Prager, Vít Obrtel, Otto Rothmayer, Zdeněk Vávra, and Ladislav Žák.
