Plzeň - Plzeň is likely to discuss an expedited change to the zoning plan so that construction can commence at the site of the former U Zvonu building, which was demolished after the floods in 2002. This was decided by city councilors today. The regional government is interested in the land, intending to build a new gallery there. Despite strong pressures for quick development of the area after the demolition, the city has maintained the small park that exists there. Following the change in the zoning plan, it will be designated as central urban land where construction is permitted, said Mayor Pavel Rödl to ČTK today. A large residential building was damaged by water from the flooded river and had to be demolished. The city subsequently announced a competition for the development of the vacant site. Numerous proposals were submitted, but ultimately none of the constructions were realized. "Today we have found a possibility for use; the gallery would be a wonderful utilization. We have decided to check whether the time has come to lift the ban on further construction, I'm quite glad that construction didn't happen quickly back then," Rödl said. According to him, it is not yet certain whether there will actually be a gallery or some other building on the site. The Plzeň region would like to build a new modern gallery at the site with the help of EU subsidies for 270 million crowns. Originally, the regional councilors considered two locations for establishing the gallery - in a historic building within the Škoda site and in the center, on the edge of the park area U Zvonu. A study commissioned by the region clearly identified the location at U Zvonu as the better option. In the new exhibition, the gallery should display rare and unique works that are currently in storage. The core of the exhibition will be a presentation of the best pieces from the collection - primarily from the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.
