Plzeň - With a grant of 240,000 crowns, Plzeň wants to contribute to the private owner of the Brummel House for the next phase of renovations of the highly valued interiors by architect Adolf Loos. The money is intended to assist in the restoration of the original, significantly damaged built-in furniture in the bedroom and bathroom, said Martin Baxa (ODS), the mayor's deputy responsible for culture, to ČTK. Last year, the owner of the house, Michal Brummel, opened the building as part of a guided tour of Loos's interiors in Plzeň.

The costs for the second phase of renovations exceed 400,000, and the city’s contribution must be approved by the councilors. "The interior of the house, which is a cultural heritage monument, features a perfectly thought-out interior layout. The individual rooms are equipped with uniquely built-in furniture for their time; it showcases Loos's characteristic refined interplay of symmetry and asymmetry, as well as the combination of various materials,” said Baxa. Originally an architecturally average house from the 19th century, it underwent radical reconstruction according to Loos's design between 1927 and 1929. Thanks to this reconstruction, the house, according to Baxa, has global significance and is one of the most valuable monuments in Plzeň.

The Brummel House on Husova Street was created simultaneously with the Müller Villa in Prague, which Loos also designed. The then owners of both houses knew each other, helped each other, and borrowed materials. For example, the cipollino marble cladding in the Müller Villa was originally intended by Loos for the Brummel House. However, its owner preferred wood, so his dining room was ultimately clad in rare wood from the root of the Canadian poplar, and the cipollino ended up in Prague, Brummel, a descendant of the original owners, told ČTK earlier. The house is considered by conservationists to be a gem among Loos's works in Plzeň, where he contributed to the designs of more than ten interiors. The house retains 80 to 90 percent of the original furniture and fittings, more than any other Plzeň apartment by Loos.
