Plzeň – Plzeň is preparing the reconstruction of Milada Horáková Square in Slovany, with total costs, including the complete renewal of all networks, approaching a billion crowns. The square is disorganized, problematic for transit, and has insufficient greenery. After 20 years of discussions and preparations, the city is nearing a zoning decision that should be issued soon, said Tatiana Kicová, head of the investment department, to ČTK. Plzeň is also preparing revitalization of Jirásek and Husova Squares.
"Various studies have been prepared (for the reconstruction of Milada Horáková Square), but no one really knew how to approach the area. Now we have finally made progress," Kicová stated. According to her, a clear traffic hub will be created there. The final tram stop will be in the center and not on the right edge, as it is now. The tram will be able to go directly to the nearby depot or switch to a second track, where it will turn around and return to the city. The road will be for cars, buses, and trolleybuses only. Public transport stops will be in the middle, and passengers will not have to run from one side to the other as they do now.
The city plans to have a significantly larger area of trees and greenery in the square, and pedestrian access will also improve. There are also plans for, for example, a café or a shop at the tram departure point to the city and facilities for drivers.
"This is a project that has many opinions, so we will see how it turns out," Kicová said. The city would like to obtain a subsidy, but there is no suitable title yet.
Plzeň is still discussing the transport connection to the nearby housing zone in the former barracks, where the private investor APB - Plzeň is gradually building up to 700 municipal apartments and a school. Earlier, there was consideration of extending the tram line. The city leadership will ultimately decide whether it will be a tram or trolleybus, and whether they will run along Nepomucká Street or elsewhere.
According to Kicová, the implementation project for the complete renewal of Jirásek Square, also in Slovany, including the monastery garden and surrounding streets, is ready, costing approximately 400 million crowns. "We are waiting for additional funding, we only have part of the finances for implementation in the budget. Part of the funds, mainly for greenery, should be covered by subsidies, with talks of around 80 million CZK," she said. The Karel Komárek Foundation helped with the financing of the project, focusing mainly on greenery. "A park, fountains, and perhaps even an area for dogs will be created there," she added.
The city's public property management will carry out the revitalization of Husova Square near the center next year.
