Prague - Plans to revitalize the unused spaces of the former Stalin monument in Prague's Letná and Štvanice Island have not yet progressed, but they persist. A private investor wants to build an oceanarium in the underground spaces of the monument. Another company plans to enhance Štvanice overall, intending to also construct a center for sports and recreation there. In connection with the oceanarium, the Prague council changed the zoning plan for part of Letná more than a year ago. According to Deputy Mayor Pavel Klega (ODS), city and investor lawyers are currently preparing a contract proposal. This may take several weeks or months, the deputy told ČTK. Underwater World won the competition in the past for the use of the spaces left by the monument. If their plan is realized, people will be able to walk through a giant aquarium via a viewing tunnel and observe over 250 species of marine fish, starfish, anemones, and crustaceans, as well as a shark from the Pacific Ocean up close. The costs for building the oceanarium were previously estimated at approximately 700 million crowns. It is unknown when construction might potentially begin. The plan to revitalize Štvanice was initially delayed by the catastrophic floods in August 2002. The investor was preparing a new project, which was again impacted by conservationists. The original Štvanice winter stadium was declared a cultural monument. A new building, including fitness centers, gyms, exercise rooms, rehabilitation pools, whirlpools, and saunas, was supposed to be built in its place. Due to complications, deadlines in the contract between the city and the company have been extended. The project should be revised. The company's intentions further assumed that recreational meadows and various sports facilities would be created in the eastern part of the island. These public areas are expected to be mostly accessible for free. The total costs for revitalizing the island were previously estimated at 1.2 billion crowns.
