Plzeň - The people of Plzeň were able to see for the first time today the dominant facade of the newly built theater, from which the company has begun to remove the scaffolding. The perforated light-colored protruding wall resembling a semi-permeable membrane, a curtain, and a painter's canvas, leans at a slight angle over the incoming visitors, symbolically inviting them to enter. However, the people of Plzeň will have to wait for that; the theater, the first to be built in the Czech Republic since 1989, will officially open in September. According to the architects who worked on the project, the unique decorative facade is not tied to any surrounding architecture. It will live its own life, letting colorful theatrical light spill directly onto the street through its openings. It will serve as a kind of transition from the real world to the world of magic. "When designing the main motif of the theater, namely the entrance facade, we decided to stop thinking like architects and start thinking more like artists and scenographers, and give the main facade a certain symbol," said architect Vladimír Kružík earlier. Plzeň is the first city in the country to build a new theater with facilities after 1989. It will cost more than 800 million crowns. Operations are expected to begin in early September. The construction of the building, divided into an operational and a theater building with two halls, an auditorium for 500 spectators, a restaurant, a ballet school, a studio stage, and underground parking, is part of the European Capital of Culture 2015 project. The contractor for the building, located close to the center between Palackého square and Jízdecká street, is the company Hochtief.
